Brisbane metropolitan rail services extend north to Nambour on the Sunshine Coast and South to Helenvale on the Gold Coast. The metropolitan services around Brisbane are of the highest standard having received a major uplift with the Commonwealth Games and Brisbane Expo in the nineteen-eighties. Most services run every 20 minutes weekdays and 30 minutes on the weekends and public holidays. In both the city and country bus services link the satellite townships.
A number of country train services offer regular trips with the Spirit of Queensland and the Tilt Train going to Cairns, The Spirit of the Outback to Longreach, and the Westlander, the Inlander, the Gulflander and the Savannahlander servicing western-central Queensland.
Then there is the world famous Kuranda Scenic Railway running from Cairns up into the foothills of the Atherton Tablelands, a great one day ride with time to walk around and enjoy the town’s hospitality. On the way the train passes the spectacular Barron Falls where you will stop for a photo opportunity and the famous trestle bridge past the cascading Stoney Creek Falls.
This is also the route of the Savannahlander classic 1960 Rail Motor as it winds westward through the Atherton Tablelands to Forsayth, rising above the sea plains and the array of waterways including the Barron River.
